Acne

Acne, or as it is known by its scienitific name acne vulgaris, is a very common skin condition caused by changes in our pilosebaceous units. Pilosebaceous unit is a fancy name for a hair follicle and a sebaceous gland. Almost 90% of all teenagers are affected by acne to some degree and it is quite common for the problems to continue into adulthood.

In this day and age several different acne treatment options are available depending on the severity of the problem. Very potent acne medication often requires a doctors prescription while milder options can be bought over the counter in your local pharmacy.

Mild to moderate acne is often treated with products containing benzoyl perozxide, such as bar soaps, washes, creams and gels. Make sure that you check the strenght of a product before you buy it as it can vary a lot. Benzoyl perozxide dissolves the keratin that has been plugging the pores in the skin, and will also kill off. Propionibacterium acnes which is a slow growing , usually aerotolerant bacterium that has been linkied to acne by scienitifc studies.

Antibiotics can also be used to treat acne, either by applying them directly on the skin or by ingesting them. Topical antibiotics will kill the bacteria present on the skin and in the follicles and is a popular choice among patients suffering from acne on a relatively small part of skin that is easy to reach, e.g. the face or chest. individuals with severe acne or acne in hard to reach spots more commony use orally ingested antibiotics instead, they do however have a larger impact on the body and can cuase side effects like stomach problems. Always tell the doctor if you use any hormones before getting a acne treatmen as hormones and antibiotics can interfere with eachother, this especially improtant if you use hormonal contraceptives.

One type of acne that used to be known as open comedo is now referred to as blackheads. Blackhead are black or yellow and casued by excess oil collected in pores. Blacks are not, despite the popular myth, caused by bad hygiene. On the countrary, excessive scrubbing of the skin can cause increased dryness which in turn can cause more blackheads as the body increase the production of oils needed in the skin.

Many wants to know how to remove blackheads since they find them unsightly, but there is often no medical need to remove blackheads since the body normally eliminates them without any special coaxing. Blackheads can be treated using acne meds containing salicylic acid. An easy alternative that dont require a precription is an adhesive strip that is placed on the skin and left there for 5-10 minutes before it is removed taking the blackheads with it.
