Hot water bottles or electric blankets – which is best?

Winters nights get cold in some regions, and regardless of how many layer you have on, you still feel that you can’t warm up sufficiently. One solution to the problem may well be an electric blanket, which simply just plugs in an away you go. It would appear to be quite obvious, wouldn’t it? If this is against your principles then plump for a hot water bottle

Maybe not so. Unfortunately, electric blankets have got something of a negative reputation. As recently as a decade ago, they had a tendency to injure their users, by causing electric shocks, burns or even fires. Blankets made years ago still cause problems today, and people who have a problem detecting heat still get burnt with newer models.

Used carefully, however, electric blankets can be safe, as long as you make sure to buy a new one (never buy one second hand) and check that you are sensitive enough to heat to feel if it gets too hot. You could just use the electric blanket to warm the bed before you jump in, and unplug it when you are ready to sleep. Make extra sure that the blanket never gets wet, and that you don’t use it together with any other blankets. Finally, you should replace the electric blanket every few years, or sooner if it starts to look like it is in bad condition.

Considering the risks associated with such a simple process, many people prefer not to bother. The best and most common alternative to the electric blanket is probably a hot water bottle, as hot water bottles cool down rather than getting warmer over time, and can be fitted with special soft covers to avoid burning you. They are also much cheaper and make excellent unusual gifts.
