Low carb nutrition based on meat

There are many different types of nutrition and diets that can be found either online, or in other sources. Many of them are based on a process that we call ketosis, in which your body stops using carbohydrates as the main source of energy, and instead uses your own body fat, and fat that you take with food, as the primary energy source. The mentioned state of ketosis can be achieved by a keto diet, which is actually just another name for a low carb diet, because on the ketogenic diet, your goal is to eat food rich in proteins and fats, and low in carbs. There are various things one can eat in order to meet the mentioned criteria. In this article we will mostly talk about meat and meat based products.

Meat is animal flesh that is used as food. Most often, when we mention meat, we think of the skeletal muscle and associated fat, but it can also be used to describe other edible animal tissues, such as organs like liver, skin, brain, kidneys and other parts. However, in this article we mostly mention meat as a skeletal muscle.

There are basically two types of meat – red and white meat. While red muscle tissue contains more narrow muscle fibers that tend to operate over long periods of time without rest, white muscle tissue contains more broad fibers that tend to work in short and fast bursts. Typical red meat would come from cows, goats and horses, while turkey and chicken (especially their breasts) are known for their white muscle tissue.

In avarage, adult animal skeletal muscle flesh contains roughly 75 percent of water, about 20 percent of protein, 2 percent of fat, 1 percent of carbohydrates and 2 percent of other substances. However, this can vary from one type of meat, to another. Chicken and turkey breasts are known to be amont the best types of meat, regarding protein content.

As you can see, meat usually has a very low amount of carbs, if none at all, and a fairly decent amount of proteins and fats, which is exactly what one needs to mantain the state of ketosis on a ketogenic type of diet. There are many meat based meals, but one one should only make sure that nothing that contains carbs is added while preparing them.
